Read more. In telling the story of Tatsuo, an elderly tofu master in Onomichi, and his exceptionally devoted daughter Haru, Mihara clearly channels Ozu’s “Late Spring” and “Early Summer” in capturing the specifics of their close relationship.
The clown moments felt like a different movie than it was intended to be
The plot unfolds as everyone eventually makes future friends, but only until enough comedic scenes with the main characters are played out in a big way. Nevertheless, screen veteran Tatsuya Fuji plays Tatsuo with wry élan, and Kumiko Aso lends a thoughtful helping hand as Haru.
For a similarly sensitive film about the artistry of uniquely Japanese food, I suggest Naomi Kawase’s 2015 An (Sweet Bean)
Fuji’s scenes with Kumi Nakamura as a sick older woman were touching, though the A-bomb connections seemed designed to add more pathos to the film.
