As I watched it, however, I struggled with a vague question: Is The Heretic a powerful film or a failed attempt at ambition? It could be Grant himself, who hasn’t shed his familiar charm to embody a character mired in philosophical conflict.
Alternatively, it could be a script torn between a compelling story with a profound message and a low-key lecture delivered through Grant as a medium
This identity crisis leaves the film somewhat ungrounded, making The Heretic an engaging watch, but ultimately difficult to classify as either entirely successful or flawed. In the supporting roles, they do a great job in the somewhat complex roles they bring in to play alongside Grant in the lead role.
