Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East star in Heretic, and the modern women who kill the horror game
Scenario
Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat and mouse in a strange man’s house. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East were raised Mormons, so they were able to provide valuable insight into religion when making the film.
Neither of them is Mormon anymore
The end credits state that no ale generator was used in the making of the film. Featured in Film Reviews: Heretic | Best Christmas Game Ever (2024).
The film is undeniably captivating, drawing viewers into complex discussions that feel timeless and urgent
The Air That I Breathe was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and performed by The Hollies. Hugh Grant delves into the dense world of theological debate, tackling topics rarely discussed in mainstream film.
Grant’s performance is compelling but lacks an intangible quality that prevents the film from fully resonating
As I watched it, however, I struggled with a vague question: Is The Heretic a powerful film or a failed attempt at ambition? It could be Grant himself, who hasn’t shed his familiar charm to embody a character mired in philosophical conflict.
Alternatively, it could be a script torn between a compelling story with a profound message and a low-key lecture delivered through Grant as a medium
This identity crisis leaves the film somewhat ungrounded, making The Heretic an engaging watch, but ultimately difficult to classify as either entirely successful or flawed. In the supporting roles, they do a great job in the somewhat complex roles they bring in to play alongside Grant in the lead role.
