Essex and Wales collide when Gavin and Stacey fall in love, bringing their friends, family and luggage with them. With the exception of the walls shot on location in London in the first episode, the entire series was filmed in Wales, including the walls set in Essex. The house used as the home of the Shipmans (Gavin family) is in Dinas Powys, a village 1 mile north-west of Barry, where the Wests (Stacey family) live. In the third season, Bryn and Gavin’s cars have completely different registration numbers than in the previous series. Gavin’s blue Saxo changed from T-reg (MY 1999) to X-reg (MY 2000). Brin’s green Picasso changed from CV02 (MY 2002, registered in Cardiff) to HV54 (MY 2004, registered in Portsmouth). Obviously, these are different cars.. Featured in Gavin & Stacey: Outtakes (2007). Directed by Stephen FretwellPerformed by Stephen Fretwell. It was a delightful, short, minimal commitment that took me two or three days to get through. There is nothing earth-shattering about it, and it does not move mountains or change paradigms. Rather, it is a character study of two (larger) families that come together – one from Wales and the other from England – after the couple’s relationship and marriage. This is a light, cheerful, friendly observation. I wish there were more shows like this, where each of the characters is kind-hearted, loving, like-minded, and thinks about those in their lives, and expresses love for them, despite their flaws. This is not an innovation, but it is not far-fetched either. This is an honest slice of life, and it’s beautiful. This is not comedy-buffoonery, which is often the case with British comedies. Rather, it is driven by characters. Highly recommended.
