Helen embarks on a passionate romance with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Helen’s employer, caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, calls on Sam to protect her. Starring in Graham Norton and the movies: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024). Black Doves is a smart and fun twist on the spy genre. Helen and Sam’s personal lives involve deception, disruption and disappointment as we see the cost of being in the game.
Things get messy
These are not robotic killers with no lives or aspirations beyond their work as Black Doves. However, the combination of personal and professional does not dampen the action at all. There are plenty of shootouts along with wit and intrigue. Although the show is smarter than the average action series, it never takes itself too seriously. The tightrope of exciting action, engaging espionage and complex leads is crossed with confidence.
Unwise to mess with Helen Webb
Keira Knightly has repeatedly shown her range in star-studded films such as Pride and Prejudice, Repentance, Anna Karenina and A Dangerous Method. But who knew she could kick tail and be completely convincing as a woman with deadly powers? Ben Whishaw is well cast as the co-lead. From The Lobster to The Hour, Fargo and Women Talking, Whishaw has taken on a variety of roles with impressive results. Whether picking off mercenaries or pondering the limits his work places on his personal life, Sam matches Helen’s complexity.
The executives are not alone in making Black Doves something special
Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley, Julia) shines as the quiet but deadly serious "guard" from doves. Reed is another smart spin on a key element of the spy thriller: talent management. It would be remiss to ignore Kathryn Hunter’s wonderful turn as Lenny. She may not be in Reed’s league in the world of violent crime, but she’s still not to be trifled with. Hunter can do no wrong, as evidenced by her excellent work in Harry Potter, The Tragedy of Macbeth and Poor Things.
Excellent and highly recommended
Six gripping episodes leave one hungry for more. Fortunately, a return to London’s underworld – as well as 10 Downing Street – is almost certain. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month. Check out our December calendar for more!
